So, I'm here at the Advancing AI event held by AMD in San Francisco. CEO Lisa Su just wrapped up her keynote. I sat through sessions on AI, GPU configs, and now I want to share with you the three takeaways that I think every investor needs to have about AI. Let's get into it. So, the first takeaway that I have, and it might sound kind of weird coming from an AMD event, is that custom silicon is not going to go anywhere. In fact, I think it's going to become more important for companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, anybody trying to build frontier models, custom silicon is going to become an even more important part of those companies' business. Now, that's going to be great for a company like Broadcom. Can't say that too loud at an AMD conference, but Broadcom is going to be a huge winner here. And it's also great for companies like Amazon and Google. They've had these custom silicon programs in place for a long time. It really just means that those companies are going to stay one step ahead of the companies that don't have it. For AMD, and even Nvidia, it means they're going to have to work even more closely with their customers to build a wider array of systems than they have in the past. A Meta engineer actually got on stage with Lisa Su during the keynote and said companies need to work more closely with chip makers to develop systems that can meet challenges and workloads of the future. So, they actually need to start looking out 1 to 2 years ahead. It This didn't really happen a lot in semiconductor space, but now it really is. And that was basically him not so subtly saying that these custom silicon programs of many of the large companies, like it's not going to go away. In fact, it's going to become more important. So, when Jensen Huang gets on stage or when Lisa Su gets on stage and says it's all about their merchant silicon, their proprietary designs, just understand underneath the hood, these companies need more and more specific chips that do specific things. What I heard here from executives, big time executives, was that it's going to become more important to develop custom silicon. That perked my ears up cuz that probably means Broadcom's going to win even more business. So, the second take I have is this going to become really important for investors is you're just going to have to have patience. The amount of investment that is going to be required by the hyperscalers and the data centers, I mean, it's going to make numbers that just going to make Wall Street really, really nervous. But as an investor, you don't really need to be nervous about quarter to quarter or free cash flow figures that are a little light in a, you know, a given period of time. The payoff's going to be there. We saw this with Google when they reported their earnings yesterday. It's just going to take time. It's going to take investors becoming more more and more comfortable with the technology and more and more comfortable with what's going on. Investors were spoiled for years. Like companies like Google and Meta, they didn't need to reinvest in their business for such a long time. It created these like massively boat bloated balance sheets. You had buybacks and all this free cash flow. All of that is going to have to go away for the next couple of years. But all of that is required to build out these data centers and build out the infrastructure that AI needs. So, as an investor, you just need to remain patient, ignore a lot of the noise. I would uh concentrate in the largest of companies because the investment is going to be so large, only the companies that can spend hundreds of billions of dollars. This will be Google, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft. Those are the only companies that are going to be able to spend enough to get the scale that is going to be required here, but it's going to require a lot of patience. So, the final takeaway I have is that hardware is hard. And so, when you're at at an AMD conference, that doesn't break any news. But, unlike software that you've had some even some wavering in some of the hyperscaler names like Meta. Hardware stocks have almost not wavered at all during this AI build-out. And that is because it is extremely hard. Not only that, the money that the hyperscalers are investing inside of their data centers is going directly to them. And maybe the most important thing is building hardware at scale, particularly the scale that Nvidia and AMD and these companies are, it's extremely hard. So, that means your total number of competitors is really, really small. Combine that with the overwhelming amount of demand that you have in virtually every company in the world needs compute right now. And anybody that is producing compute is going to get customers. Now, I do believe though, over time that the cream is going to rise to the top. So, if you're watching this and you're wondering what semiconductor and what hardware names to invest in, Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom. It's going to be a broken record for a while. Those are going to be the top tier. Now, in the second tier, you've got companies like Qualcomm, Arm Holdings, Cerebras, Marvell. Maybe maybe they get a little bit of business and maybe that lasts for a really long time if this AI AI build-out really extends out several years, but I believe that any investor watching this, all you need to understand is hardware is hard, there's not a lot of competition, and when the hyperscalers are spending hundreds of billions of dollars, all of the money is going to go to them. You need to stay firm in your belief that AI is the next big thing and stay firm in your belief that the money's going to be there.
