I'm Peter Shack now. CNBC. Wall Street has concluded a losing week, but the stock market did cut a chunk of its losses with a modest Friday rally. The Dow gained 518 points to close at 53,277. The S&P 500 rose 4/10en of a percent or 33 points. And the Nasdaq also rose 4/10en of a percent adding 113 points. The Dow actually had its best day since August 4th, although 229 points of its gain came from one stock, Goldman Sachs. This week's volatility notwithstanding, Jim Lamp, senior portfolio management director at Morgan Stanley, says the market's bullish trend is still evident. >> I still call it somewhat of a rodeo bull because there's a lot to fight through, kid, but the trends are still in place. And the way that you fatten a bull is with earnings. And earnings have been fantastic. You don't get 88% of companies beating the top line unless the economy is going pretty well. You've got a market that does have some issues in front of it, but by and large the trends are still in place. >> Among stocks on the move today, two retailers rallied after reporting better than expected quarterly results and raising their outlooks. Ross stores gained 4.4% while BJ's Wholesale jumped 5.6%. Michael Zakor, CEO at retail consulting firm 5 New Digital, says a focus on price will become more prominent for retailers as the year moves on. >> Consumers are finally starting to pull back and they're getting a lot more choosy about where they spend and how they spend it. And so I think, you know, we're seeing that move towards off price from a an equity point of view. You know, I still love Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart. Target has some catching up to do, but I think we are at an inflection point going into this holiday season where the consumer is finally going to get more choosy and maybe hold back. >> Bitcoin related stocks rallied today with the digital currency itself jumping more than 20% this week. Crypto exchange operator Coinbase rose 8.2%. Trading platform Robin Hood surged 13.7% and Strategy, the company formerly known as Micro Strategy, was up 6.1%. Also in the mix today, some upbeat economic news. S&P Global's monthly index measuring the service sector rose to its highest level since December of 2024. Peter Shacknau, CNBC.
