month dips to add exposure across stocks, ETFs and options. Joining us now is Joe Mazzola, director of trading services over at Charles Schwab. To take a closer look at the data. Joe great to have you on. I always love when this Dax data comes out. We're higher for the third straight month here. I've highlighted a couple times highest level we've seen in more than four years. What does that tell you about Schwab clients right now? Are they becoming more bullish or are they simply more active? I think they're becoming a little more bullish. And Marley, I've heard through some different research out there that retail as a whole was a net seller of equities in the month of July. And I'm just not seeing it. Our data is not showing it. I think if anything it shows that, you know, clients embraced volatility as a as a way to buy dips. If you look at the top five stocks that were bought, I know you were showing a clip a little bit earlier space, but that was number one on the list. They were able, they were able to buy it, you know, sub the IPO price, micron, Intel, Oracle, Tesla those were all top five buys. You know micron had about a 3,540% pullback from its high Intel very very similar in terms of its trading. And then you know Tesla you know post earnings pulled back. So these were good opportunities for for clients to buy the dip. And if you look at equity overall kind of, you know, net buying activity across the board, it was about 2 to 1 positive for Schwab clients. So like I said, it was, it was an opportunity for them to, to get some discounts. And it, it proved, you know, rather fruitful for them by the end of the month. So Joe, how bullish is that that 2 to 1 buy sell ratio then of equity and ETF activity when we pair it against the S&P also rising. I think it was about 1.85% in the month of July. So you know anywhere between the one and a half to two ratio is what we typically see. Anything above two, we would we would call that, you know, more moderately or, you know, skewed a little bit towards more heavily bullish. So we're kind of in that moderate to, you know, to, to medium bullish area right there. But I, like I said, it wasn't necessarily that they were buying highs. They were looking for really good opportunities. The other thing that I thought was really interesting was some of the option activity. We saw Marley a lot of puts selling, especially in names that had really gotten beat up, you know, during, during those couple week pullbacks that we saw mid mid to late month names like SanDisk, Western Digital, micron, you know, so anything that that was tied to the AI or memory trade, really good opportunities for clients to sell puts in that. So that was a way for them to kind of harness that volatility and look for better entry points. But you know, it wasn't just all buying. We did see some selling. And what I would say was interesting about the selling is it tended, it tended to be stocks that were either rallying or hadn't really moved much during that time period. Those were the top five sells on the list. But as you as you look kind of as a whole, I think two other things really stood out to me. Gen X was the was the group that did the, the heaviest amount of buying and then traders over investors. And that might not be surprising to people, but it was the widest margin of traders bullishness relative to investor bullishness that we've seen in a couple of years. So traders traders more so than investors really use that as an opportunity to get some some decent bargains out there. All right. A lot to unpack there. Let's start with the sell side here. Specifically looking at at Apple. You know, they they were at a 52 week high roughly before we started to see some of the trimming ahead of earnings. Is that telling you that traders and investors are becoming more valuation conscious, even when the underlying company appears to still be strong? Fundamentally, I think I think that's a fair point. What I would say is that it's it's typical behavior to buy the dips and sell the rips. And so when you do see a stock like Apple that is outperforming, especially with a narrative behind it at that time, remember, one of the reasons Apple was outperforming is because they had a lot less in terms of their CapEx spend towards, towards AI. So I think that, you know, as the stock continued to outperform, maybe some of its its mega-cap brethren, that was an opportunity for clients to maybe trim some of those positions. And, and I think that's an important point is it doesn't necessarily mean selling. It means trimming so that, you know, they might still have some of those positions, but they were willing to reduce those on, on the rally. And then, you know, if you look at some of the other ones, you know, a D had been approaching all time highs during that during that period as well too. So it's just a way for them to maybe take off some of their winners and look for other opportunities where they see more upside potential, as opposed to continuing to just ride those winners. And let's talk about one that's not a winner, but still seems to see quite a bit of buying activity. You mentioned space is at the top of the list. We have seen a lot of interest in this stock today. Finally got back above its IPO price. It's since fallen off. We're at 131 right now. But throughout most of the month Joe we were well below that IPO price both the price and the opening price. What does that tell you about investor conviction? Is it is it tied to AI in the space economy or is it tied to Elon Musk? I mean, what is driving this fascination with space, despite the numbers not doing what investors hoped? Yeah, I think that that is probably a great question for our next trader sentiment survey is, you know, what, what's driving the buying activity? It's probably a little bit of both. I think a lot of it's the Elon ink. I think that, you know, there was probably some some investors that were looking for it at the IPO price that saw, hey, you know, it dropped below that. This is a this is a good entry opportunity for us. I mean, it traded down to about 104, 105 in that range during the month. So you get a chance to, to buy a company that you might believe in long term or, you know, by a CEO, by a company that's being led by a CEO that you believe in a long term vision and you're getting it at basically a 25, 30% discount from the IPO price, even with the volatility. And I think that that's a that's an important point, Marley, is that, you know, the Schwab clients didn't run away from volatility. They embraced it and they took advantage of it. So that was in my mind. You know, the reason that we saw the the the conviction on the buy side for that stock. And Joe, as we look broadly across the sectors and some of the breadth and the rotation that we've been seeing, what did this tax data show us about sector performance in terms of net buying and net selling? Yeah. What was interesting is that there's only two of the 11 sectors that were net buys, and they probably weren't what you what you were thinking a little bit more skewed towards maybe some cyclical sectors. Whereas you know the sectors that saw the most selling were financials and tech, which maybe flies in the face a little bit when you look at those, the names that were bought. But what they were looking to do is maybe, you know, sell out of some of the other tech names that they didn't see the potential for outperformance and looking for those stocks that pulled back. So I thought that that was an important narrative. From, you know, from the, the, the month. So industrials materials, those those were the sectors where we saw the buying. And, you know, industrials, if you look at just kind of what that sector has done over the last three months, it's one of the winners up there with financials and health care. And that to me signals that, you know investors are comfortable with the overall narrative that the economy is improving because those are cyclical type sectors where you own when you believe in a stronger economy. And the other thing I would add to that too, is that if you look at some things like the the city economic surprise forecast indicators, you know, they're showing that the economic data may be outside of last week's jobs numbers has come in better than expectations. So I think we're kind of at an impasse a little bit right now in the economy, where you continue to see better prints along the way. But there's also maybe a little bit climbing this wall of worry too. And I and I bring that up because alongside the Stax report, which really shows client activity, we also do another survey. And that was the one I was alluding to a little bit earlier. And that's the sentiment survey. So what are they saying versus what are they doing? They're saying that they're a little bit more bearish as they're heading into August this current month. But at the same time they're buying. And I think that's actually a pretty good setup for the markets. Climbing that wall of worry, feeling a little bit nervous about, you know, the inflation numbers that we're getting this week, what that can do to interest rates, but at the same time, looking for opportunities that that's usually a pretty good formula for a bull market.
