… crazy. Which means a huge slice of institutional Bitcoin exposure is concentrated behind one custodian and a single point of custody is a single point of control and that means single point of failure. So how should you actually use ETFs? One legitimate use case is tax advantage accounts, IRA, 401ks, places where direct Bitcoin custody isn't practical. 66% of you say self- custody matters. 46% of you are afraid of an exchange getting hacked most recently like BitGet. And yet 88% of you are still one login page away from being an unsecured creditor. And that contradiction is the entire story of 2026 in one data point. Now, while you've been leaving your coins on someone else's server, Strategy has quietly accumulated over a half million Bitcoin. The US government still sits on a substantial seized stockpile held on a legal foundation any future president can erase with a signature. Institutions are consolidating hard money at record scale, and retail is holding a login page. This is why we call it smart money versus dumb money. No offense. Today we're going to fix that. Okay, thank you for watching. Thank you for subscribing if you haven't already. Highly recommend it because we're going to build or rebuild your personal sovereignty stack for 2026 across three tiers. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced. So, there's four layers per tier. So, hang with me. Wallet, we have backup. We have privacy and monitoring. We'll look at what actually works, what quietly broke this year, and what you should be doing this weekend. Real quick before we get into it, if you are looking for a hardware wallet, there are some great options out there. One that we've been using for years is Treasure. In fact, you can use the code crypto tips at checkout for a discount. Link is down below in the video description. Okay, let's get into the video. First, why this matters more in 2026 than it did in any year before it. The traditional system didn't reject Bitcoin. It did something smarter. It wrapped it. The on-ramp through ETFs and custodial exchanges is beautiful now. It's frictionless. Your uncle can buy Bitcoin exposure in his brokerage account between coffee and lunch. But that rapper strips out every property Bitcoin was designed for. You don't get verification. Transfer rights disappear the moment the custodian says so. and censorship resistance is simply not part of the product whatsoever. And the pressure is building on both sides. Micah's crypto asset service provider rules came into full force at the end of 2024. And 2025 has been the enforcement year across the EU. Several exchanges have restructured or pulled services in response and community developers on centralized exchange affiliated chains like BNB have been openly nudging European users toward self-custody. When the operators inside the system are telling you to leave, maybe you should listen. On the tax side in the US, form 1099DA is live. So for 2025 transactions, custodial brokers report your gross proceeds directly to the IRS and cost basis reporting is being phased in. On top of that, every centralized touch point is now a reporting touch point by default. Meanwhile, Bitcoin circulating supply crossed 20 million BTC earlier this year, which is about 95% of everything that will ever exist. Chain analysis estimates millions of those coins are permanently lost, which means key management isn't a hobby. It's the sovereignty question itself. All right, now let's build the stack. And I want to kill a myth before we start. Ready? The stereotype says self custody is for permanent hodlers, for people who never move their coins, or if you're Michael Sailor, self-custody is for paranoid crypto anarchists. Sign me up. Put that on a t-shirt. I'd wear it all day. Anyway, recent data from the Tandem and Protocol theory report found the opposite. In fact, cold wallet users are almost twice as likely to be active traders than passive holders. Sovereignty doesn't cost you liquidity. Period. The data shows cold wallet users trade more actively than exchange users do. So, let's start with the wallet layer. Ledger and Treasure control the majority of the global hardware wallet market with Ledger having shipped millions of devices since 2014 and Treasure the original well into 7 figure unit sales. Now for open- source firmware across multiple coins, Treasur's safe line is the go-to. And the newest models lean into postquantum cryptography and open-source secure element design, which matters for anyone thinking on a 10-year horizon, which if you know anything about Bitcoin, that's the minimum. Now, Ledger Nano X wins on convenience and coin support, but the firmware is closed source, and Ledger's customer database has been breached before with hundreds of thousands of customer records exposed in the 2020 incident and follow on issues since. And that last point matters because those breaches didn't leak private keys. They leaked names and shipping addresses of known Bitcoin holders, which is a physical attack vector. And it's why you always buy direct from the vendor. Furthermore, the KYC that you go through on centralized exchanges puts you at a very similar risk cuz you know what kind of information they're asking from you. It's a lot more than what Ledger ever asked you. Anyway, layer two is backup. And this is where most people quietly fail. Roughly one in four crypto users has lost access to funds at least once. And a large share of self-custody users report they have no reliable backup of their seed phrase. That's the hidden crisis behind the millions of lost coins. The rule is simple. Paper doesn't survive fires or floods and it fades over time. You want steel. And in fact, there's a company called Crypto Steel which make capsules that are rated to survive house fire temperatures. Think two metal backups minimum stored in two geographically separate but also secure locations, a home safe and a bank deposit box, or a trusted family member's home. Now, here's the trade-off, and I want you to think about it carefully. Two backups and two locations reduces the risk that one event wipes you out, but it also doubles your theft exposure because now the full secret exists in two places. So the mitigation is a passphrase, which is a 25th word that lives in your head, never stored with a seed. done right. If someone finds your metal backup, they find an incomplete key, which is what separates mathematically proven security from hoping nobody finds the safe. All right. Now, layer three is privacy. And I have to be honest with you about what happened this year. The privacy toolkit for Bitcoin is even thinner than it was in 2023 because Samurai wallet was shut down by the Department of Justice in 2024. Its founders were sentenced in 2025 and ZK Snacks discontinued the Wasabi coordinator in mid 2024. Legacy join market infrastructure has also degraded. What survives is Wasabi with third-party coordinators and communityrun forks of Samurai's whirlpool tooling that developers have kept alive. The important legal reading, and I have to caveat this heavily because it depends on where you live. As of 2026, no jurisdiction has prosecuted individual coin join use for personal transaction privacy. Enforcement instead has targeted coordinators, not users. But this is not legal advice. And if you're in the US or the EU and considering this layer, talking to a tax attorney or crypto specialized accountant is a sensible move just so you can get all the information to make your own decisions. It's always rests on your shoulders what you're going to do with your money. Privacy is a fundamental human right, not a shield for criminality. The tooling is degraded. It's unfortunate and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. All right. Layer four is monitoring because a stack that you can't watch is a stack that you can't trust. Now, for free entry points, Mempool.space gives you Bitcoin transaction visibility. Glass Node publishes a free weekly onchain newsletter and Arcam Intelligence offers free wallet exploration for entity analysis. If you upgrade to paid, Glass Node leads on Bitcoin macro cycle metrics. Nansen on smart money and wallet tracking and Arcam on entity attribution. The free tier is enough for anyone building their first stack. So don't let paid tools become another excuse for in action. Okay, three stacks, three budgets. The beginner stack runs about $100 total. One treasure safe 3, roughly $70 depending on region. And if you use crypto tips, you can get a promotion. one metal backup plate and free monitoring through meool.space and the glass node newsletter. Now, most of you don't need more than this to be genuinely self-s sovereign. Now, for intermediate, run two hardware wallets from different vendors. A treasure plus a bit, for example, is a good option because two vendors reduces single supply chain risk. Add two metal backups geographically separated protected by a passphrase that lives only in your memory. So don't get knocked on your head either with Sparrow wallet on your desktop for example for spending and monitoring. And the advanced layer is two of three multi-IG using maybe a treasure again a bit box and a third device of your choosing coordinated through Sparrow or Nunchuk. three metal backups with one held by a collaborative custody partner for example Casa Solutions Jameson Lop's company or attorney for inheritance a full node on Umbrell or Start 9 so you're validating the chain yourself instead of trusting a block explorer that also helps you with transaction fees and optionally the privacy layer jurisdiction permitting this is not a purity test sovereignty is a spectrum and you move up the tiers as your stack size and your comfort and knowledge and education grow. Now, the ETF question, which is the highest leverage teaching moment in the entire video, so listen carefully. Spot Bitcoin ETFs are not wallets. They are fund shares. When you buy IBIT, the chain looks like this. You own a share of an ETF. The ETF owns a custody account and the custody account holds Bitcoin. There are three parties, three parties between you and your Bitcoin and each one is a counterparty. Insane. You cannot move ETF Bitcoin onchain because you do not have any Bitcoin. You have a fund share. Verification against the blockchain isn't available to you either. So, you can't verify if you wanted to. And in any scenario where you might need to take direct possession, well, you know you can't. Now, you know you can't. Most spot Bitcoin ETFs use Coinbase custody as the underlying custodian. You'd be shocked how much money Coinbase custody is custody over. It's crazy. For every other dollar in a taxable account, the correct path is to buy on a reputable exchange withdrawal to your hardware wallet within days or minutes and verify the transaction onchain. Treat ETFs as an on-ramp for accounts where direct custody isn't possible. Then get everything else onchain and into your own hands. All right. Now, the last piece is the annual maintenance routine. And this is important because a stack that you set and forget is a stack that fails you the day that you need it. Sorry to break it to you. Once a year, block off a Saturday. Start with firmware updates on every hardware wallet, verifying the vendor signature before you install. Then test restore each seed backup on a spare device using a small amount first. Physically inspect the metal backups for legibility. If your passphrase storage location has never been shared with anyone, rotate it. Review your inheritance documentation. Audit your exchange exposure so that anything not being actively traded moves to cold storage. And finally, refresh your monitoring alerts. That's one Saturday a year, and you'll no longer be pretending that you have sovereignty when you actually don't. I think it's worth it. All right, look. This is a picture. Institutions are consolidating Bitcoin at record scale. The regulatory perimeter around custodians is tightening every quarter. The privacy toolkit is thinner than it was. And 95% of all Bitcoin has already been mined. You do not need to be in the top 1% of technical users or of even, you know, investors. You need a hardware wallet, a metal backup, a passphrase in your head, and one Saturday a year. That's the floor that moves you out of the 88% and into the group that actually owns their Bitcoin. Don't trust, verify. Thank you for watching. If you want to take your crypto knowledge seriously, there's no better place than learning crypto.com. A link is down below in the video description. Thanks for watching. I'll see you in the next video.
